So I bring the first eq band and set it there with a really steep curve. A kick I find hits car stereo speakers (like regular speakers) around 25hz. Every mixer channel should have EQ then compression.ĮQ personally I would be more rigid about. You hardly even need to touch the mixer faders once you get compressors working for you. Myself I'd recommend learning the fruity compressor in and out and then getting a visual representation of what you're doing in the fruity limiter. Actual channel routing was a good move compared to leaving everything on the master and playing with the volume multiplier in the channels that's another option.

I thought the information presented was slightly more advanced than when I was first starting out (heh I thought it was just me that threw a soft clipper on the master), but to me this is basic mixing at best. Even if the tips provided by such videos are bad, there will be a point in time where you will realize it and improve (I'm pretty sure the fellas are still learning too), like you said 'trial and error'. No, people will learn over time and improve on this so called 'ear training'. We can't assume that everyone who learns from them and other videos like this, will have this information engraved forever. These fellas in the video are simply trying to help out the newbies. As you said yourself, it takes years of experience to 'master' this. FL may seem like a complex program to some new users I don't think learning about the fundamentals of compression and EQ'ing is really on their mind when they simply want to make things 'work' to their tastes. Most of these types of videos provide exposure to the user on how to carry out the BASIC steps on messing around with their project. You may already know that there is a huge audience in which are fairly new into music making and seek out tutorials for help. You say this with the implication that people seek YouTube videos for professional advice on how to mix and master.
